KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — As Russia’s war on Ukraine unfolds, it is using an old weapon for a new war: drones.
In the first week of the invasion, Ukrainian forces shot down dozens of drones, a Russian-made Forpost drone being among them. On Friday, the Ukrainian military said it had shot down another six drones.
Drones cannot win a war, but they can be used to terrorize the population. These unmanned aerial vehicles can attack targets with precision from a distance, making them a valuable asset in modern warfare.
Ukraine has requested more drones from its Western allies to help combat the Russian forces. The United States has pledged to send hundreds of Switchblade drones to Ukraine, which are small and lightweight but can still carry explosives.
The use of drones in this conflict highlights the changing face of warfare in the 21st century. As technology advances, so do the tools of warfare. In this case, drones are being used to wreak havoc on Ukrainian cities and civilians.
The Ukrainian military is doing what it can to shoot down these drones and protect its people. As the war continues, the use of drones will likely only increase, further complicating an already complex and devastating conflict.
