DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — AUTHORITIES SAID A FIRE BROKE OUT THURSDAY IN A RESTAURANT IN A DHOAKA NEIGHBORHOOD, KILLING AT LEAST FIVE PEOPLE AND INJURING MORE THAN 30 OTHERS IN THE CAPITAL OF BANGLADESH.

Fire service officials said the blaze started in the kitchen of Palki restaurant and caterers in the Farmgate area and quickly spread to the roof. It took firefighters four hours to douse the flames.

At least five bodies were recovered from the spot and an unknown number of people were feared trapped inside the building, the officials said. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

The injured were taken to several hospitals in Dhaka and many of them were in critical condition.

Bangladesh has a long history of deadly fires, often traced back to safety violations. The country’s worst fire on record occurred in 2012, when a blaze at a garment factory outside of Dhaka killed at least 112 people.
